WK 05.2 Summary

Critique Summary:

I was impressed by the level of detail that Jamal and Brandon had gone into for their analysis. This inspired me in a large way to think more about a particular system in order to flush out the details.

Jamal had also looked at a variety of system components far removed from the site in order to better understand some of the program aspects of his proposal. This inspired me to do some additional research.

My own project fell short of having a clear path forward. In doing my analysis, I discovered a variety of systems that could be improved upon, but I had not selected any one particular system to focus on. Until now.

I will be focussing my program and narrative on the flow of energy into and out of the project site.

IMAG2219

Starting with the very basic flow of energy from the sun, and eventually into carbon (above).

IMAG2220

I will also look at how energy from the sun impacts other global systems (above).

IMAG2221

Energy use on the site (above). In order to understand magnitudes of energy use, and compare potential production I will need to understand energy use on a variety of scales.

IMAG2222

The site receives multiple forms of energy (above). Some of this energy flows through man made systems (above right), while others flow through natural systems (above left). My proposal will look at the overlay of these energy sources in order to look for potential ways in which my proposal can serve dual functions.

My hope is to better understand the flow of energy in order to design a system (or systems) that add efficiency, and or support multiple energy needs on the site and beyond.

  1. Neil – It’s good to see that you were energized by the presentation of others and I see how it is honing your focus. As you heighten your focus on energy, I encourage you to consider what can be done to benefit the experience of the neighborhood and its residents.

  2. These sketches are a good start to consider the flows of energy. Continue to re-visit these diagrams over the weeks ahead to clarify which energy flows are most relevant for our site and how your project “fits” or “situates” itself within your energy flow diagram (the sketch at the top of the last page). Are you proposing that your project is developing an “off the grid”, self-sustaining urban development solution?

    • Jason…the short answer is yes. I am really interested in the overlay of human, natural and renewable energy use. In order to better understand energy use, I am working on a conversion of units and scales of energy (calories, metabolism, auto, Lightning Strike, etc.). I will use this information to help inform where interventions might be most effective, and what the equivalent benefit of those interventions (wind, solar, etc.).
