Wk 4.02

After reflecting on the comments from last weeks review, I have taken the canopy in a new direction. In this design, the structure of the canopy is inspired by natural elements.

My initial sketch (below) considers how a structural module can replicate some of the functions of nature. In this case, I was inspired by the light filtering, solar collecting, rain harvesting power of trees.

After considering what a module looked like, I wanted to explore how multiple modules might fit together (below) and work together to perform a variety of eco-functions.

After a few sketches, I wanted to see what this design looked like at the neighborhood scale. My next task will be to look at several configurations in order to determine wether this design will be adaptable to a variety of neighborhoods and needs.

  1. I feel like this has a lot of potential. Is it safe to assume that nobody will be allowed on top of these structures? The one thing that might be a hiccup is that you are putting this structure in the air to collect energy. How would you decide where to put the darker masses compared to the light filtering areas. When old construction goes down and new infrastructure is placed, it is not uncommon for people to want roof decks. These people will probably not want a dark mass above them in this scenario.

  2. Thanks for your comment B. I have actually thought a little about this. There are several types of translucent solar panels on the market now. I anticipate the final design using a combination of solar cells that block the light, and ones that filter it. This fits more into my initial concept of harvesting energy at multiple levels (solar, plants, natural light, etc.).

  3. The lighter canopy structure makes sense esp. when it begins to interact with the existing rowhouse infrastructure. Tying it into the stormwater infrastructure and farming solar energy is a very good trajectory. I think there is another potential variation/evolution that would allow your canopy system to occupy the vacant parcels and “kiss” the adjacent buildings that bookend it (without completely intruding over their property boundaries). This strategy allows for both systems (built rowhouses + new social/solar/stormwater urban canopy) to complement one another. And if homeowners decide to connect/extend this system on their property, then your structure of your system can engage their parti walls and provide them with an opportunity to plug into it.
